Wellbeing

At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.

How we support student wellbeing

Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.

We do this through:

Learning and Support Wellbeing HUB

Our Learning and Support Wellbeing HUB, is a dedicated space designed to support our students' emotional and social wellbeing. Led by our Learning and Support Teacher, Mrs Noakes, and Student Support Officer, Mrs Djuricin, the Wellbeing HUB provides a calm and welcoming environment where students can regulate their emotions, seek wellbeing support, or discuss any challenges they may be facing—whether at school or at home.

The HUB is staffed at all times, allowing students to self-refer or access support through their classroom teacher. Students may visit for regular breaks, participate in tailored teacher programs, or drop in as needed. The space features a variety of areas to meet different needs, including chess for cognitive engagement, comfortable lounges for conversations, regulation zones providing "heavy work," and sensory activities like playdough to help with emotional regulation.

If you feel your child could benefit from the support offered through the Wellbeing HUB, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher. We are committed to ensuring every student has access to the support they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Learning and Support Teacher Support

Mrs Noakes, is our dedicated Learning and Support Teacher, who plays a vital role in nurturing the wellbeing and academic growth of our students. Mrs Noakes works closely with students to provide tailored support programs that address their individual needs, ensuring every child feels confident and supported at school. She regularly checks in with families to foster open communication and collaboration, helping to create a strong partnership between home and school. Additionally, Mrs Noakes supports our teachers by developing personalised learning support plans, enabling targeted strategies that help students thrive in their learning journey. We are grateful for her commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all our students.

Supporting Student Wellbeing

At Umina Beach Public School, we are deeply committed to supporting the whole child – not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Our dedicated Student Support Officer, Mrs Djuricin, plays a vital role in this work. She is available Monday to Friday in the learning and support room, providing wellbeing check-ins, one-on-one support programs, and in-class assistance. Mrs Djuricin’s role focuses particularly on social and emotional support, helping students build a strong sense of belonging and connection within our school community. This approach aligns closely with our wellbeing framework, which is designed to ensure that every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed and thrive at school. If you believe your child could benefit from additional wellbeing support, please speak with your child’s class teacher, who can assist in making a referral to the learning and support team. Together, we work to create a positive and inclusive environment where all students can flourish.

Aboriginal Education Resource Teacher (AERT)

At Umina Beach Public School, we are proud to have a dedicated Aboriginal Education Resource Teacher (AERT), Ms Morgan, who supports our students' cultural education. Ms Morgan delivers whole-class lessons that integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural perspectives into the units students are learning across their classes.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students also have the opportunity to participate in enriching cultural programs, including dance, weaving, didgeridoo, and cultural excursions. Ms Morgan provides a culturally safe space and acts as a vital link between our students, families, and the wider community, helping to connect with local organisations that support Aboriginal education and culture.

You can find Ms Morgan in the Aboriginal Education room, located in the Blue Building near the K-2 Playground. We warmly invite you to stop by for a chat or to learn more about the cultural opportunities available to our students.

School Chaplain Program

The School Chaplain Program continues to be a valued part of our school community, providing essential pastoral care and support to students, staff, and families once a week. Our chaplain offers a listening ear, guidance, and positive wellbeing initiatives, helping to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Through their presence and dedication, they foster resilience, respect, and connection, contributing to the overall wellbeing and success of our school community. Our Chaplain program is supported by 'Your Dream'. If you would like to learn more about the program or how to access chaplaincy services, please contact your class teacher, who can refer to the Learning and Enrichment Team.

Food and Sun Safety Support- Aboriginal Education Room

We offer a welcoming space in the Aboriginal Education Room where students can access food freely and discreetly during lunch, recess, and before school. We also provide hats for students who may have forgotten theirs but still want to play safely on the grass. This space is designed to support students’ nutritional and sun safety needs while maintaining a safe, inclusive environment for all.

Our aim is to create a safe and supportive environment where every student feels included and cared for. By offering these resources, we are removing barriers that may cause some students to feel excluded or hesitant. We want every child to know they are welcome and valued at our school, and that help is always available whenever they need it.

We encourage families to talk to their children about this space so they know it is there for them at any time. The Aboriginal Education Room is more than just a place for practical support—it’s a space where students can feel comfortable, build positive relationships, and strengthen their sense of belonging to our school community.

Supportive Social Programs

At Umina Beach Public School, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing of every student by implementing a range of evidence-based social programs designed to build resilience, foster positive relationships, develop life skills, and promote emotional regulation. These programs help nurture a strong sense of belonging and wellbeing within our school community. To enhance this support, we partner with trusted external providers to deliver targeted programs such as Top Blokes for boys, Fit for Life through a partnership with PCYC, and RISE for girls. These programs offer students additional opportunities to develop skills that contribute to their overall health and personal growth. Students are carefully selected by their classroom teachers to participate, with a particular focus on ensuring all students, especially those in Stage 3, have access to one of these valuable wellbeing initiatives. We believe this targeted approach helps meet the diverse needs of our students and supports their success both academically and personally.
